WWF spots 5 rare cats in Riau

The World Wildlife Fund (WWF) has spotted five endangered cats in the forests of Riau.

WWF Indonesia tiger research team leader Karmila Parakkasi said Wednesday that the five cats comprised Sumatran tiger (Panthera tigris sumatrae), Sunda clouded leopard (Neofelis diardi), marbled cat (Pardofelis marmorata), golden cat (Catopuma temmincki) and leopard cat (Prionailurus bengalensis).

Karmila said the cats were spotted by WWF surveillance cameras living between the Bukit Tigapuluh National Park and Rimbang Baling Sanctuary in Riau.

“Our cameras recorded their activities, passing the same tracks all the time,” Karmila said as reported by Antara news agency.

The location where the cats were spotted, Karmila said, was also known as “the corridor”, or the track connecting the two conservation areas.

“The two areas are currently threatened by deforestation,” she continued.

Within three months of systematic survey using automatic surveillance cameras, WWF Indonesia has collected 404 pictures of wild cats living in both areas.
